Killing in the Kuyahoora Valley-Front Cover

Bloated Toe Publishing of Peru, New York, is pleased to announce the release of a new true-crime title, Killing in the Kuyahoora Valley (126 pp, $18) by award-winning author Lawrence P. Gooley. The book chronicles the story of Poland, New York, schoolteacher Lydia Beecher, who was brutally murdered in 1914 by student Jean Gianini. This landmark case was the first murder of a New York State schoolteacher, and introduced an unusual defense—not guilty by reason of imbecility—which thereafter became commonplace. The book is now available from Bloated Toe’s North Country Store, located online at www.bloatedtoe.com/north-country-store.

Gooley has now authored thirteen books on Adirondack history, including regional best-seller Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. Garrow, and Oliver’s War: An Adirondack Rebel Battles the Rockefeller Fortune, which won the 2007 Adirondack Literary Award for Best Book of Nonfiction. A chapter in his recent book, 25 Diabolical Adirondack Murders: The Twisted, Fiendish Deeds of North Country Killers, was featured on the Discovery ID special, Bloody Marys.

In 2012, the Adirondack Center for Writing cited Bloated Toe Publishing for “a great job publishing outstanding books by regional authors.” The company, located south of Plattsburgh, is operated by author/publisher Gooley and his wife, Jill C. Jones.
