Garrow’s horrific crimes incited panic across the Adirondacks in the 1970s. Revelations made during his trial caused widespread revulsion and disbelief, and his confessions ensured him lasting infamy as both a serial rapist and serial killer. Though he was imprisoned, Garrow’s exploitation and manipulation of the state’s courts and the correctional system kept him in the headlines for years, leading to an improbable, spectacular conclusion to his story.
His case also garnered national television and newspaper coverage regarding client confidentiality. The resolution of that issue became a benchmark for legal ethics, and is now a staple of law courses everywhere.
This is Gooley’s eighth book on regional history. In 2008, his last title, Oliver’s War, won the Adirondack Literary Award for Best Book of Nonfiction, and is currently in the hands of a New York City film company.
